QW-432ASME IX F-Numbers — 용가재 Grouping for 용접 Qualification
API 1104 references on this page are to the 2021 edition; Addendum 1 (published 2026-09-03) is not incorporated.
- F-Number 1 — E6020, E7020, E7027
- High iron oxide electrodes with a fluid slag and high 용착 속도. Primarily used in the flat and horizontal positions. The heavy, fluid slag makes these electrodes unsuitable for vertical or overhead welding. Less common in modern fabrication but still used for certain flat-position production applications.
- F-Number 2 — E6012, E6013, E6014, E7014
- Rutile-type electrodes with a medium-penetration arc and easy slag removal. E6013 is the most common in this group. These electrodes are popular for general-purpose fabrication and sheet metal work. They produce a smooth, quiet arc with minimal 스패터 but are not classified as 저수소 — they should not be used for 예열-critical or high-restraint applications under D1.1 or similar codes.
- F-Number 3 — E6010, E6011
- Cellulosic-covered electrodes with a deeply penetrating, forceful arc and fast-freezing slag. E6010 (DC only) and E6011 (AC/DC) are the 표준 electrodes for pipeline root passes under API 1104 and for open-root groove welds in structural work. The aggressive arc requires specific welder technique. These electrodes are NOT low-hydrogen — they produce the highest 확산성 수소 levels of any SMAW 전극 group.
- F-Number 4 — E7015, E7016, E7018, E7048
- Low-hydrogen electrodes (EXX15, EXX16, EXX18, EXX18M, EXX48). This is the most commonly specified F-number in pressure vessel and structural fabrication. E7018 is the dominant electrode in this group. Low-hydrogen characteristics are critical for avoiding hydrogen-assisted cracking in higher-carbon and alloy steels. D1.1 and ASME IX both impose storage 요구사항 (heated rod ovens) for these electrodes because moisture absorption degrades their low-hydrogen performance.
- F-Number 6 — Carbon Steel Solid Wires
- ER70S-2, ER70S-3, ER70S-6, and other carbon steel solid wires per AWS A5.18. Used in GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG) processes. ER70S-6 is the most widely used GMAW wire in structural and pressure vessel fabrication. Table QW-432 assigns F-Number 6 to all classifications of several specifications, including SFA-5.18 (carbon steel solid wires), SFA-5.20 (flux-cored), SFA-5.17 (submerged arc), and SFA-5.9 (stainless steel bare wires), not only solid carbon steel. QW-433 qualifies a welder who tested with any F-Number 6 for all F-Number 6 filler metals.
- F-Number 6 — Carbon Steel Flux-Cored Wires
- E71T-1, E71T-8, E71T-9, and other carbon steel flux-cored wires per AWS A5.20. FCAW wires are widely used in structural fabrication for higher deposition rates than SMAW. E71T-1 (gas-shielded) and E71T-8 (self-shielded) are the most common. Despite sharing an F-number, gas-shielded and self-shielded FCAW wires require different equipment and technique. The F-number grouping reflects the similar wire-feeding and arc characteristics within the FCAW process family.
- F-Number 22 and F-Number 23 — Aluminum Alloy Filler Metals
- Aluminum GTAW/GMAW wires per AWS A5.10, split across F-Numbers by chemistry. F-No. 22 (Al-Mg 5xxx wires): ER5356, ER5183, ER5556. F-No. 23 (Al-Si 4xxx wires): ER4043, ER4047, ER4643. F-Numbers 21, 22, 23, 25, and 26 cover all aluminum filler metals in 표 QW-432 (there is no F-24). ER4043 (F-23) is the most widely used wire for 6xxx-series base metals. ER5356 (F-22) is preferred for 5xxx-series alloys and higher-강도 applications.
- F-Number 43 — Nickel Alloy Filler Metals
- ERNiCr-3, ENiCrFe-2, ENiCrFe-3, and other nickel-based filler metals per AWS A5.14 and A5.11. F-Numbers 41 through 46 cover nickel and nickel alloy filler metals in Table QW-432. Used for dissimilar metal joints, overlay welding, and high-온도 service. Common in power generation and petrochemical applications where carbon steel transitions to stainless steel or where high-temperature corrosion resistance is required.
- F-Number 6 — Austenitic Stainless Steel Solid Wires
- ER308L, ER309L, ER316L, and other 300-series stainless steel wires per AWS A5.9. Stainless steel bare wires 공유 F-Number 6 with carbon steel solid wires in Table QW-432. ER308L is the most common for 304 stainless steel, ER316L for 316 stainless steel, and ER309L for dissimilar joints between carbon steel and stainless steel. Note that F-Number 6 covers both carbon steel and stainless steel solid wires. For WELDER performance qualification,
QW-433permits interchangeability (ER70S-6 ↔ ER308L) within the same F-Number. However, PROCEDURE qualification (WPS/PQR) requires separate qualification: ER70S-6 is A-No. 1 weld-metal chemistry (Mild Steel, C-Mn-Si) while ER308L is A-No. 8 (Chromium-Nickel, 21Cr-10Ni) — an A-Number change is essential perQW-404.5. Plus the base-metal P-Number combination (P-1 carbon steel to P-8 stainless) must itself be qualified perQW-424.
D1.1 does not use F-numbers. Instead, D1.1 specifies acceptable filler metals through Table 5.7 (now split into process-specific tables in the 2025 edition), which lists approved electrode/wire classifications for each 모재 group. Table 6.6 filler-metal rows are process-specific: SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW requalify an increase in classification strength (item 1); SAW, FCAW, and GTAW requalify any electrode or flux-electrode classification change (item 3). E7018 to E71T-1 is a process change (SMAW to FCAW) as well as a classification change. ASME IX F-number grouping can allow some same-F-number changes that D1.1 still evaluates against those Table 6.6 rows.
